![]() One month prior to the show at the Olympia, Coltrane told the bandleader he wanted to leave the quintet to focus on his solo career, but Davis convinced him to stay until the tour ended on April 10, 1960. Instead, it was about to fly apart.Ī creative rift had formed between Davis and his enormously talented tenor saxophonist, John Coltrane. Fresh out of the legendary Kind of Blue recording sessions, the group led by the seminal jazz trumpeter was expected to be tighter than ever. It was the first night of Norman Granz’s “Jazz at the Philharmonic” European tour, and the lineup on the marquee was impressive: the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Stan Getz Quartet and, headlining, the Miles Davis Quintet. Let me know if you have any questions about a particular album. The mood was tense in the backstage area of the illustrious Olympia Theater in central Paris. The exceptions are the Carnegie Hall date with Mobley/Evans and the electric live albums (with the exception among these of "Live Evil," the live portions of which will be available on the "Cellar Door" box when it comes out). Only two albums up to Davis' temporary retirement are, however, completely unavailable on any box: "On the Corner" and "Get Up With It." The live albums are also where you'd expect to find them (either on the appropriate boxes-"Seven Steps." and ".With John Coltrane"-or now available themselves as expanded boxes-"Blackhawk" and "Plugged Nickel"). A few stray tracks, as I describe them above, fell through the cracks of the boxed set arrangement. All of the original studio albums are where you'd expect to find them, but "Filles." is split between the "60's Quintet" box and the "In a Silent Way" box. One more thing: to get all of "Filles de Kilimanjaro" you need to have BOTH the '60's Quintet box and the In a Silent Way box.Ĭlick to expand. So, that at least describes what the list you're looking for would look like. All of the other official live releases on Columbia (plus some extras) are available on the "Coltrane," "Seven Steps," and "Plugged Nickel" boxes. You also need all the live releases from the late '60's (the Carnegie Hall and Blackhawk sets for the Mobley period and the electric sets that got rereleased a number of years ago from the early '70's). The live cuts from "Live Evil" will be available on the "Cellar Door" set (its studio cuts are on the "Jack Johnson" box). Here's a link:įor "pre-comeback" Miles on Columbia, if you have all the boxes, you still need "Someday My Prince Will Come" (for the tracks with Mobley, but not Coltrane), "Big Fun" (for "Ife") "On the Corner" (for all of it) and "Get Up With It" (for all of it). Can anyone help me? )Ī few of us hashed out the extent of this problem (if it is a problem) on a thread a while back. Someday my prince will come (not complete, just the tracks with Coltrane to own the whole album you need the album LP, CD or JSACD)ĥ. I'll list each box and the albuns it contains:Ĥ. I'm not sure I'll be able to make it complete without some help. I'll try to start this list, and I hope others are able to make it complete. Your question was answered before, but I'm afraid no thread has all the information gathered at once. ![]()
